Here at the practice of Paul S. Herrin, DDS, we always want to keep up with the latest in dentistry and orthodontics so that we can improve the convenience and comfort of our patients’ treatments. From DIAGNOdent to digital X-rays, we aim to go above and beyond for the benefit of our patients. One of these great new advancements that we offer in our Florissant office is Invisalign – a discreet alternative to traditional braces.

What Is Invisalign?

Unlike traditional braces that use metal brackets and wires to straighten a patient’s smile, Invisalign utilizes clear aligners that are made of an almost-invisible polyurethane plastic to move teeth. Unlike metal braces that are cemented to the fronts of a patient’s teeth, these aligners are removable and can be taken out whenever needed as long as they’re worn for about 22 hours per day.

How It Works

Invisalign is an effective, yet simple, process that follows a few basic steps. First, you’ll have to come in to visit your Florissant dentist to see if you’re a candidate for Invisalign since not all patients are suited for this treatment. If you’re a candidate, we’ll then use our digital imaging software to capture images and impressions of your teeth. Invisalign will translate this gathered information and create a series of customized aligners with it.

After receiving them, you’ll wear the first set of aligners for two weeks, making sure to keep them in for about 22 hours per day and typically only removing them for cleaning your teeth, eating, and important occasions. Once the two-week period is over, you’ll move onto the next set of aligners in the designated order. You’ll continue through this process, changing aligners after every two-week period until the treatment has finished and you’ve achieved the beautiful smile that you’ve always desired!

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign offers a plethora of great benefits for its patients that includes, but isn’t limited to, the following:

  • As indicated by its name, Invisalign is practically an entirely invisible treatment – others won’t even realize that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Unlike traditional braces, you won’t have to forego any of your favorite foods for fear of breaking your orthodontics since you’ll be removing your aligners before you eat.
  • Also, because you can remove your aligners, brushing, cleaning, and maintaining your teeth remains the same as ever.
  • The aligners are made out of a smooth polyurethane plastic that allows for a much more comfortable treatment than you’ll get from the metal wires and brackets of traditional braces.
  • If you grind your teeth at night, the aligners will provide protection from it.

Invisalign’s Treatment Time

Unfortunately, there’s no close estimate that we can provide for how long Invisalign should take as each case is different from the next. The time that a patient will have to spend wearing aligners is mostly dependent on the severity of the orthodontic problem. As a general guideline though, the average Invisalign treatment takes approximately 12 months with adult treatment taking longer than adolescent treatment. The reason for this is because adults typically come in for more complex cases and they also have less responsive teeth and jaws.
