What Are Dental Sealants?

As the name implies, dental sealants are a procedure where we apply a thin, transparent layer of sealing resin over the teeth – usually, the chewing surfaces of the rear molars. The sealants serve to seal off these areas, protecting the enamel from corrosive acids and bacteria without disrupting bite function or the appearance of the smile. Sealants are a convenient, effective way to prevent cavities in children to promote healthy dental development - adults can benefit from this as well!

Does My Child Need Dental Sealants?

Cavities are one of the most, common preventable diseases, and that goes double for children, as the enamel in baby teeth isn't as strong as permanent teeth and is more susceptible to dental decay. Furthermore, the chewing surfaces of the rear molars are very difficult to keep clean: they have so many nooks, crannies, cracks, and crevices, that it's almost impossible to keep bacteria from growing there and eating at the teeth. Because of this, the majority of cavities in children start in the chewing areas of rear molars.

Sealants solve the problem before it starts. By cleaning and sterilizing the teeth, then sealing them off with dental resin, we can prevent bacteria from attacking the rear molars, protecting the teeth from cavities. While they may not be right for everyone, dental sealants are an effective preventive measure for most children. With that being said, Dr. Herrin will work with you and your child to decide if dental sealants are a good option in your case.

What To Expect During Your Dental Sealants Treatment

Generally speaking, placing dental sealants is a minor routine procedure that takes only one office visit. There's no pain during the procedure, and most children barely notice the sealants after they're in place. When you come in for the sealants, Dr. Herrin will thoroughly clean your teeth with a special brush and dental implements, ensuring that the tooth is completely free of bacteria and food particles. After that, he'll apply a mildly acidic solution to the teeth for a few seconds before rinsing it away. This acid cuts tiny, microscopic etches into the surface of the tooth, allowing the resin to adhere to the tooth surface.

After rinsing off the acid, Dr. Herrin will pain on the dental resin, then harden it using a special light or another component of the sealant. Once the sealant has finished hardening and completely set into place, your teeth will be protected from cavities for years to come!
